Using Protact® achieves supply rationalisation for Akzo Nobel’s Sikkens paint brand. By offering both corrosion protection and engineered surface roughness it can solve several issues and allows for one universal paint can ring that is able to meet various market requirements. The thick polymer coating also makes the use of a sealing compound for the lid and bottom redundant – resulting in a cost benefit. Irrespective of the type of paint (water or solvent-based) and irrespective of supply chain specifics (mixing machines used) Protact is able to meet all needs in one product!

Safe

The engineered surface properties of Protact® compared to lacquers ensure that the lid fits securely onto the can. A feature that is very important for paint cans. Due to Protact‘s® unique coating integrity and scratch resistance, it protects both the inside as well as the outside of the paint and against corrosion. Furthermore Protact® cans are the perfect choice for the car re-spraying business. The inherent strength of the packs makes them suitable for these environments where they receive considerable handling.

Attractive

Protact’s® unique polymer coating makes it abrasion and scratch resistant. Completely protected from corrosion the excellent look of the can remains, even while the product is being used intensively. Protact® is available in various colours. Akzo Nobel selected the gold colour from the range of colours available. The gold version was found to fit the brand image as it was considered the most ‘sophisticated, yet cool’.

Initiate

Akzo Nobel was unsatisfied with using epoxy lacquered paint can rings due to corrosion. In response to that, Impress and Corus Packaging Plus jointly developed the Protact® paint can ring and bottom.

Co-operate

Corus’ Protact® pilot line allowed for a quick review of different polymer recipes and quickly led to the most suitable one for this application. Besides offering support to test prototype packages, Corus Packaging Plus also supported Impress to ensure a smooth processing of the polymer-coated material.
