![]() The Protact 2-piece aerosol can, made by DS Containers (DSC), is the first consumer package of its kind worldwide. Using proprietary technology developed by DSC’s partner, Daiwa Can Company of Japan, the new container will initially target the aerosol sector, but is equally adaptable to other packaging formats and any liquid or viscous product. The use of Protact polymer-coated steel makes it a really versatile and highly adaptable package that accepts numerous closure systems for multi-purpose uses. Both the can and the end are made of Protact. Protact gives superior quality through its well-known protection against corrosion, state-of-the-art decoration possibilities and food safety through FDA and European food legislation compliance. The use of Protact makes it possible to safely pack a wide range of products, from aerosol products to liquids. Eight colour decoration, 18-bar pressure rating and a pressure release bottom expand the use of this package into numerous markets. Development of this unique package began three years ago in Tokyo by the same Daiwa engineers who created the two-piece laminated aluminum ‘new bottle can’. Working with their counterparts at Corus Packaging Plus, this team took the ‘new bottle can’ technology to a new dimension. Corus Packaging Plus has supported the development of the polymer-coated steel and the tooling/can making aspects, based on our experience with the use of polymer-coated steels. As Protact comes pre-coated and no sheet cutting or lacquering is required, DS Containers is able to use a coil-to-can system. Equipment is now being installed in DSC's new, 236,000 square foot plant in Batavia, Illinois, built specifically for this product. The new plant will begin production later in 2005. Commercialisation of the can is expected in the 3rd quarter 2005. Interpack takes place 21-27 April in Dusseldorf Exhibition Centre (www.interpack.com).
