Corus is committed to protecting the environment by minimising the impact of our operations and products. We aim to adopt sustainable practices and practise continuous improvement in environmental performance and control. Corus’ energy consumption during steel production has reduced by 40% in the last 30 years. During the last 10 years, our water consumption has reduced by 33%. And by focusing on reducing waste from production, we have achieved a 62% reduction in the amount of waste to landfill since 1992. Improving the energy efficiency of processes has proved a direct way to reduce CO2 emissions. For instance, in the Netherlands Corus joined the Benchmarking Energy Efficiency covenant in 1999. The participating companies committed themselves to become among the world leaders in the field of energy efficiency as soon as possible, and no later than 2012. In 2000, Corus Staal already proved to be a world leader. In 2002 our energy efficiency further improved by 2.1%, in comparison with the base year 1999, which puts us on schedule in terms of remaining among the leading global companies in the future. The environmental impact of our operations is controlled through management systems. All Corus Packaging Plus’ sites are on ISO 14001-level. | |
