Promoting a cleaner society

Drinks packaging is a limited but very visible aspect of litter. In some cases, a deposit system for non-refillable drinks containers is considered as a way to deal with litter. However, in practice such systems function inefficiently, because litter consists of much more than simply beverage containers and the costs involved are high.  Additionally, such systems appear to make a limited contribution to achieving metal recycling targets. We believe a broader approach is therefore required to effectively combat litter.

Corus actively promotes recycling of post-consumer steel packaging, and encourages end consumers to adopt an ethical approach to packaging disposal. For example, we support national campaigns by Keep Britain Tidy (UK) and Nederland Schoon (Netherlands). These organisations target the problem of street litter through awareness projects that promote a cleaner society.

We place a high priority on changing consumer behaviour towards litter. In the Netherlands, Corus supports local initiatives such as cleaning the access road to Corus in IJmuiden and the Clean Beach Action Plan, carried out in conjunction with local beach municipalities. Together with Heineken we put can crushers on Dutch beaches and we financially support litterbins at fuel stations, supermarkets and other locations. Our delivery vehicles carry the national slogan of Nederland Schoon on the back, promoting the anti-litter message Keep the Netherlands Clean. Because education is an important building block for encouraging people to change littering behaviour, we also sponsor the ‘Adventure at Sea’ instruction package.
