Our Responsibility

Corus takes its responsibilities for the future seriously. We play a leading role in industry-wide R&D programmes to develop breakthrough technologies to decrease CO2 emissions in steelmaking even more drastically than the 50% reduction already achieved over the last 40 years.

We are also cutting waste and our use of hazardous substances in our manufacturing process.

Light-weighting (downgauging) is another key to reducing the impact of packaging, so we are focused on developing ever-thinner high strength materials, at the same time safeguarding our material’s formability and performance. The weight of a food can is 33% less than it was 20 years ago.

In the UK, Corus is the largest steel recycler. Corus Steel Packaging Recycling (CSPR) promotes steel packaging recycling to consumers, local authorities and the commercial sector, and offers an established end market for recovered used steel packaging.

Corus Packaging Plus has for years supported the various initiatives in the steel packaging industry to raise the profile of steel as a material. Apeal, the joint association of European producers of steel for packaging, recently launched a sustainability campaign called ‘Steel for packaging – naturally’.
